Messaging and portal consolidation for educational institution

Problem

In a state university in Mexico, various economic and management benefits could be acquired through the consolidation of their portal and e-mail platforms, avoiding multiple and sometimes incompatible environments that currently exist in educational institutions, as well as to establish a personalized unique access point towards the University’s information. Additionally, the goal was to find those benefits of support and reliability given by leading market tools that supported these crucial services.

The business problems to be resolved were the following:

  • Consolidate the e-mail and portal institutional tool in a standard, secure, and reliable messaging environment.
  • Use the portal as a common mechanism for collaboration and integration for the academic staff and student body.

Solution

Taking as reference the QoS Labs virtual private environment concept applied to some of our customers and to the internal operation of the company, a portal was designed that could integrate e-mail, calendar, and instant messaging services in a personalized environment.

With this solution, academic staff and students were able to access an institutional work environment with tools that facilitate communication and collaboration within the University, encouraging students and staff to use electronic means and providing security for the institution’s private information.

The solution also allowed to simplify and make efficient user administration by enabling a central institutional directory for its storage and management.

Technology and/or tools used

The solution used Sun Microsystems’ messaging and portal products, implementing the following components:

  • Sun Java System Directory Server
  • Sun Java System Instant Messaging
  • Sun Java System Calendar
  • Sun Java System Messaging Server
  • Sun Java System Portal Server
