SaaS Reference Framework

The design of a SaaS reference framework must include a wide variety of critical aspects of a service that have to do with ubiquitous application integration, IT management, usability and business intelligence:

  • Service interoperability
  • Social media interoperability
  • Standardized protocols and APIs to interact with third-party databases, systems and services
  • Distributed computing capabilities (Web services, REST, RMI, asynchronous messaging, transaction confirmation, etc.)
  • Virtual computing (i.e., virtual machine, virtual memory, virtual storage, virtual network)
  • Cloud and utility computing
  • Group privacy
  • Semantic annotations and constructs (e.g., machine readable semantic meaning to information, tags, controlled vocabularies, metadata, folksonomy mapping, ontology)
  • Semantic Web interoperability (i.e., RDF, XTM, standard ontology)
  • Client dynamic web pages and Rich Internet Application (RIA) usability
  • Contextual service/content personalization
  • Analytics (e.g., web analytics, business analytics, predictive modeling)
  • Mobility including smartphones and netbooks
  • Identity management and federation
  • IT Governance
  • IT management applied to service configuration, provisioning, security, fault correlation, Service Level Agreement (SLA), data logging and event/transaction accounting, and service desk
