The design of a SaaS reference framework must include a wide variety of
critical aspects of a service that have to do with ubiquitous application
integration, IT management, usability and business intelligence:

- Standardized protocols and APIs to interact with third-party
databases, systems and services
- Distributed computing capabilities (Web
services, REST, RMI, asynchronous messaging, transaction confirmation,
etc.)
- Virtual computing (i.e., virtual machine,
virtual memory, virtual storage, virtual network)
- Cloud and utility computing
- Group privacy
- Semantic annotations and constructs (e.g.,
machine readable semantic meaning to information, tags, controlled
vocabularies, metadata, folksonomy mapping, ontology)
- Semantic Web interoperability (i.e., RDF,
XTM, standard ontology)
- Client dynamic web pages and Rich Internet
Application (RIA) usability
- Contextual service/content personalization
- Analytics (e.g., web analytics, business
analytics, predictive modeling)
- Mobility including smartphones
and netbooks
- Identity management and federation
- IT Governance
- IT management applied to service
configuration, provisioning, security, fault correlation, Service
Level Agreement (SLA), data logging and event/transaction accounting,
and service desk
